About the University of Queensland and Scholarship
The University of Queensland was established by a State Parliament Act in 1909 and was officially established on April 16, 1910, with the gazettal of appointees to the first UQ Senate. The first classes were held in 1911 in the Old Government House on George Street in Brisbane. In the first year, there were three faculties and 83 students (60 males and 23 women).
Following World War I, the University developed quickly and outgrew its inner-city position. A second location in Victoria Park (currently used by the Medical School) was acquired in 1922. Dr. James O’Neil Mayne and his sister, Miss Mary Emelia Mayne, supplied funds four years later to purchase the St Lucia property where the University’s main campus is presently located. Construction on the St Lucia site began in 1937, and the first structure, subsequently dubbed the Forgan Smith structure after the day’s Premier, was finished in 1939. It served as the forward headquarters for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific during World War II.
The David Farrell Postgraduate Scholarship was founded in 2001 as a result of a gift from David Farrell; it was recognized by the Senate in 2015.
