The public research university University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The Sydney Technical College, which functioned as the precursor of the New South Wales Institute of Technology (NSWIT), is responsible for the university’s beginnings as a technical institution, which stretches back to 1878.
Outstanding individuals with training in biomedical sciences, pharmacology, pharmacy, or a related field are encouraged to apply for a fully supported Ph.D. fellowship at the Centenary Institute’s Centre for Inflammation, which will be supervised by Prof. Phil Hansbro.
The goal of the research is to use a mouse and human tissues to study how chronic respiratory disorders including COPD, asthma, lung cancer, and infections begin and advance. The institution group consists of “clusters” that focus on various topics, such as general chronic respiratory disease, bioinformatic analyses of genome-scale datasets, epigenomics studies, mitochondria, oxidative stress, and immunometabolism, microbiome studies, and exosome studies of human and mouse tissues. Their own COVID-19 PC3 laboratory has also been developed.
Applications must be made by candidates who have earned a master’s degree by research in a relevant field of study or who have an undergraduate degree with at least a credit average (or equivalent) and research experience from a first- or second-class honors program.
The primary objectives of the program include determining the pathophysiology and creating novel therapies for respiratory disorders such as COVID-19, fibrosis, infections, and COPD. Studies on innate immunity (Toll-like receptors, IFNs, mast cells, and inflammasomes), epigenetics (acetylation, methylation), single-cell sequencing/RNAseq, proteomics and multi-omics, bioinformatics, mitochondria/oxidative stress/immunometabolism/steroid responses, and macrophage biology could all be included.

Candidates are advised to meet the following prerequisites to be eligible for Developing New Treatments for Respiratory Diseases such as Asthma, COPD, and Fibrosis at the University of Technology Sydney:
- Either permanent Australian residents or nationals of New Zealand may apply.
- A bachelor’s degree in a biological or medical field is required for applicants.
- Own a stellar academic record and previous lab experience
- Receiving an honors degree with a First Class, Second Class Division 1, an MSc Research degree, or an MSc Coursework degree with a research thesis lasting at least six months.

In addition to having research experience from an honors program (first class, second class division one, or a Master’s degree by research in a related field), applicants must possess an undergraduate degree with at least a credit average (or equivalent).
- Possess outstanding communication skills, the capacity to interact with a wide range of individuals, and the ability to function both alone and as part of established collaborative teams. be highly driven and able to work independently.
- Understand the conditions and setting of a study or laboratory
- Be familiar with common research software on computers.
- Possess knowledge of common lab procedures like ELISA, RNA extraction, reverse transcription, qPCR, western blotting, cell culture, aseptic technique, histological analysis, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, and primer design.
- Be able to perform in vivo mouse models.
