About McGill University and Scholarship
McGill University, located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is a prestigious English-language public research institution with a rich history. Established in 1821 by royal charter, it was named after James McGill, a Scottish merchant whose generous bequest in 1813 laid the foundation for the University of McGill College. In 1885, the institution’s name was officially changed to McGill University. McGill has consistently held the top position in Maclean’s Medical Doctoral University rankings in Canada for the past 19 years.
The university’s main campus is situated on the slope of Mount Royal in downtown Montreal, within the borough of Ville-Marie. It also maintains a second campus in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, located 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of the main campus on Montreal Island. Notably, McGill is one of only two members of the Association of American Universities outside the United States, with the University of Toronto being the other member. Additionally, it stands as the sole Canadian representative in the Global University Leaders Forum (GULF) within the World Economic Forum. Offering a wide range of degrees and diplomas across over 300 fields of study, the university’s six largest faculties are Arts, Science, Medicine, Education, Engineering, and Management.
McGill’s excellence in education and research is evident in its consistent ranking as the top medical doctoral university in Canada, according to Maclean’s Canadian University Rankings 2023. This distinction has been maintained for 19 consecutive years. Furthermore, The Globe and Mail’s Canadian University Report 2019 categorized McGill as “above average” in financial aid, student experience, and research, while rating it as “average” for library resources. In the 2020 edition of Research Universities of the Year by Research Infosource, McGill secured the second spot among Canadian universities with medical schools.
