About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

The University of Queensland was established by a bill enacted by the State Parliament in 1909, and on April 16, 1910, the first UQ Senate nominations were formally declared. The Old Government House on George Street in Brisbane opened its doors to students in 1911. The three colleges of arts, science, and engineering each had 83 first-year students (60 males and 23 women).

The University outgrew its site in the heart of the city after World War I as a result of its fast growth. The Medical School was permitted to use a second Victoria Park location in 1922. It functioned as the South West Pacific advance headquarters for the Allied Land Forces during World War II. Dr. James O’Neil Mayne and his sister Miss Mary Emelia Mayne contributed money to buy the land in St. Lucia that is now the site of the university’s main campus four years later. The Forgan Smith building, named for the premier of the time and the first structure on the St. Lucia site, was finished in 1939.

With around twice as much production as the worldwide average, UQ was designated by Nature Index as the research university in the southern hemisphere in 2015 with the largest volume of research output in the transdisciplinary periodicals Nature and Science. UQ is #1 in Australia and second internationally in terms of sports-related subjects. UQ is ranked third globally and second in Australia in terms of mineral and mining engineering.

Brisbane Diamantina Health Partners, Queensland’s first academic health science system, mainly relies on the University of Queensland. A range of support and student services are maintained by the University of Queensland.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Scholarship was created in 2020 and is kept up thanks to an endowment contribution from the foundation.
