About the University of Regina and Scholarship

In Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, there is a public research institution called the University of Regina. The Regina Campus of the University of Saskatchewan was established in 1961 after being established in 1911 as a private denominational high school of the Methodist Church of Canada. It began an association with the university as a junior college in 1925, was disaffiliated from the church, and fully ceded to the university in 1934, in 1961 it became a degree-granting institution. In 1974, it attained university autonomy. Over 15,000 students attend the University of Regina full- and part-time. The Carillon, the university’s student newspaper, is a part of CUP.

The University of Regina is known for emphasizing experiential learning and provides cooperative education placements in 41 programs in addition to practica, professional placements, and internships. The University of Regina introduced the UR Guarantee Program in 2009, a novel program that ensures participating students a successful career launch after graduation by supplementing education with experience to achieve specific educational, career, and life goals. In 2009, the University of Regina launched the University of Regina Family Scholarship to support DEPENDENT University of Regina workers who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate courses. The beneficiary must be a legally recognized DEPENDENT, spouse, Administrative Professional and Technical Employee, Academic Staff Member, or Out-of-Scope Employee of an eligible CUPE Local 5791 Employee.

Benefits:

Each semester, several awards totaling $1,000 will be given to members of CUPE Local 5791, Administrative Professional and Technical Staff, Academic Staff, and Out-of-Scope Employees. For each employee of whom they are a DEPENDENT or spouse, students are entitled to up to $2,000 per year (CUPE Local 5791, Administrative Professional and Technical, Academic Staff, and Out-of-Scope personnel).

Eligibility Criteria for the University of Regina Family Scholarship

Please note that if you are not a dependent or spouse of a qualified employee of CUPE Local 5791, an eligible Administrative Professional and Technical employee, a qualified member of the academic staff, or a qualified Out-of-Scope employee, DO NOT APPLY as you are NOT qualified.

For admitted graduate students/continuing graduate students entering the first year of a degree program:

– pursuing a Master’s or Doctoral degree at the University of Regina

– enrolled and continues to be enrolled as a full-time graduate student in the first year of graduate studies

– has a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 80%

– is a recognized DEPENDENT or spouse of an eligible CUPE Local 5791 employee, Administrative Professional, and Technical employee, Academic Staff member, or Out-of-Scope employee. Employees must meet the requirements established in the relevant collective bargaining agreements to be eligible for the Family Scholarship benefit.

The definition of a dependant will be based on Sun Life’s policy, which is available online, for additional clarity. If a student continues to meet the eligibility requirements after receiving the award, it will be automatically renewed for each semester of the following year, up to a maximum of $2,000 (CUPE Local 5791, Administrative Professional or Technical, Academic Staff, or Out-of-Scope employees per family, per year). A prior recipient will no longer be automatically assessed each semester and will instead need to reapply for the award if they have failed to meet the standards for two consecutive semesters.

Interested and eligible candidates for the University of Regina Family Scholarship should log in or register.

Students must also upload the following materials:

IMPORTANT: You MUST provide a copy of your previous institution’s transcript together with the grading key if you are an entry student at the University of Rochester who has not yet received any grades. This is in addition to the official transcript from MyCreds or the unofficial transcript located in UR Self-Service. These papers must be merged into one and uploaded; 

Likewise, if you are the spouse or dependent of someone who works for the Administrative, Professional, and Technical (APT)/CUPE Local 5791/Faculty/Out-of-Scope, please include their name and if they are an employee of that union. An application cannot be deemed complete without these components.
